You’ve probably had some pretty good ideas over the years. Maybe you’ve thought of an interesting business concept. Maybe you’ve invented a new gizmo of some sort. Maybe even you’ve figured out a way to address the energy crisis. You might have had a great idea for a book or a film. Guess what? All of that is fine and dandy, but an idea won’t take you anywhere unless you decide to take action.
That’s right. As you can probably infer from the title of this article, pretty much the only thing that sets those who accomplish great things apart from those who don’t lies in the execution. We all have great ideas, but few of us carry out those great ideas. In my opinion, deciding to act is the single biggest factor in successful entrepreneurship. But don’t take my word for it. Greats minds throughout history feel the same way:
Well done is better than well said. — Benjamin Franklin
It’s not what you know, it’s what you do with what you know. — Unknown
You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action. — Tony Robbins
Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy. — Dale Carnegie
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. — Mark Twain
The list of great quotes goes on and on and a unified message resonates in all of them: Get out and work on accomplishing your goals. Make your dreams a reality. Believe it or not, this seems like the tough part but in reality, if you’ve already come up with an inspiring idea, more than half the work is already done!
Dreaming big is a challenge because it calls for us to be unique and break out of the conformist mindset of society. On the other hand, working hard is something we’re already supposed to know how to do. It is as American as apple pie. Whether you work hard for someone else and their ideas or yourself and your ideas is completely up to you.
So get out there and put your ideas into action. Set goals, create plans and most importantly, do something! If you work hard enough through the challenges that will surely come, you’ll be way ahead of the game. Start right now by deciding what small step you’ll take today to work towards actualizing your ideas. You get the picture, now make it happen!
